This Jameson whiskey based shooter is similar to a kamikaze but brighter and more refreshing. Plus, only 4 ingredients are required to make a green tea shot! This quick tutorial shows you how to make this popular cocktail so you can impress your guests at your next dinner party!
The first time I had a green tea shot it reminded me of a kamikaze because of its yellowish green color and fruity flavor. But while the kamikaze has a strong vodka taste, the green tea shot is much more mellow in the sense that it tastes more like a summer cocktail than a shot.
What’s In A Green Tea Shot?
A green tea shot is a whisky based alcoholic drink made with four ingredients:
- Jameson Irish Whiskey
- Sour mix
- Peach Schnapps
- Lemonade or lemon-lime soda such as Sprite
What Does It Taste Like?
A green tea shot is sweet, bright and peachy, with the boozy taste of whiskey to warm up the back of the throat. It’s very easy to drink and won’t get you drunk since a green tea shot only contains 1 ounce of alcohol. While the size of a shot glass actually varies by country, in the United States, a shot is 1.48 ounces. So you will get a nice little buzz that should last a little less than hour.
Do I need Green Tea to Make this Drink?
No because there is no actual green tea in a green tea shot.
The cocktail gets its name from its greenish yellow that is similar to a good old cup of green tea. So for those of you who thought you were going to get a boost of antioxidants with your libation, sorry to disappoint you!
Green Tea Shot Ingredients
- Jameson Irish Whiskey: Jameson whiskey is the recommended brand because it was invented by the Jameson whiskey company. But feel free to use another popular whiskey brand or American whiskey. Since this is a whiskey cocktail, the taste of the alcohol is quite diluted so you won’t be able to tell the difference.
- Sour mix: Sour mix is a cocktail mix made of equal parts lemon and lime juice with some simple syrup that’s been mixed and shaken with ice cubes. You can buy it at the liquor store and in some grocery stores.
- Peach Schnapps: Also often used as a cocktail mix, Peach Schnapps is a grain spirit that’s been flavored with sugar and fruit.
- Lemonade or lemon-lime soda: I personally prefer using sugar-free lemonade for this drink as I’m a big fan of sour drinks. If you prefer sweet, use sweetened lemonade or Sprite for a little fizz.
Making Your Own Sour Mix
If you find store bought sour mix too sweet and would prefer making your own, the recipe is very easy to follow. You will need:
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice, strained (no pulp)
- 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice, strained (no pulp)
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Place the sugar and water in a small saucepan and simmer on low until the sugar has completely dissolved.
- Transfer the syrup to a bowl and let cool to room temperature.
- Combine the simple syrup, lemon juice, and lime juice, and add a pinch of salt.
- Transfer the sour mix to a mason jar and refrigerate for up to 10 days.
How To Make A Jameson Green Tea Shot
To make a green tea shooter you will need the ingredients listed above, a shaker, and some ice cubes.
- Put equal amounts of whiskey, peach schnapps and sour mix into a shaker.
- Fill the shaker with ice, put the lid on and give it a vigorous shake.
- Pour the drink into shot glasses and add a splash of lemon-lime soda or lemonade.
Green Tea Shot Variations
If you are looking for something other than a classic green tea shot recipe, here are two other popular shots you might be interested to try:
White Tea Shot
A white tea shot is made with 1 ounce vodka, 1 ounce peach schnapps, 0.5 ounce lemon juice, and 0.5 ounce simple syrup. The ingredients are put in a cocktail shaker with ice and shaken until cold. Once strained into a shot glass, the white tea shot looks like cloudy tap water.
Tokyo Green Shot (Tokyo Iced Tea Shot)
The Tokyo iced tea shot contains more booze and ingredients than the green tea and white tea shot. While recipes can vary, the common ingredients mixologists can agree on are:
- Equal parts Midori melon liqueur, gin, rum, tequila, and vodka
- Sweet and sour mix
- Soda
- Lemon wedge as garnish
The drink is made and served in a tall glass with ice.
Green Tea Shot Cocktail
If you don’t enjoy doing shots but like the taste of green tea shots, how about making it into a cocktail!
You can easily turn this green tea shot into a green tea martini. All you need to do is to shake the ingredients for a bit longer to let the ice cubes melt and top with extra lemon-lime soda or lemonade. Or serve it as a cocktail in a tall glass with ice cubes.
The taste will be diluted but easier to sip on than a concentrated shot.
Green Tea Shot Mocktail (Non-Alcoholic)
To make a non-alcoholic green tea shot, simply replace the alcohol with 0.5 ounce of fresh lime juice and 1.5 ounce coconut water.
Or you can actually use green tea and turn this alcohol based shooter into a healthy beverage. My friend Matt has a delicious recipe that’s energizing and packed with antioxidants. Click here for his version of a non-alcoholic green tea shot.
Other cocktails and shots you might be interested to try:

- 0.5 ounce Jameson Irish Whiskey
- 0.5 ounce peach schnapps or other peach liqueur
- 0.5 ounce Sour mix

Instructions
- Fill shaker with a few ice cubes.

Notes
To make ahead: If you wish to make a big batch ahead of time, mix the whiskey, schnapps, and sour mix in a jar or pitcher and leave it in the fridge. When it’s time to serve the shooters, pour 1.5 ounce of the mix in a cocktail shaker – or double or triple the servings since you can make more than one shot at a time – add a few ice cubes and close with a lid. Shake for a few seconds and serve topped with a little lemonade or lemon-lime soda.
